Introducing week two of ‘Meet the bloggers Monday’
1. Can you tell us about yourself and your blog.
I am Vicky and together with my husband, we are the Married Meeples. I started out as The Growing Mum, blogging about parenting and life in general, before teaming up with my other half. He brings the gaming, geeky, dad angle to the blog!
2. What inspired you to start your blog?
No unique epiphany here, just the usual maternity leave blues and the need for an outlet!
3. How much time do you spend blogging?
Not as much time as I would like really. With two little ones, sleep deprivation and experimenting with other side hustles, we barely have time to write. We have a ton of ideas though. The goal for this year is to write once a week at least.
4. Would you encourage others to start their own blog?
I would but only if there’s a mission in mind as that will be the motivation when the going gets tough. If you just want to document your life then perhaps start with an online journal. If you are looking to help others or earn from then it is definitely a worthwhile venture.
5. A lot of people think blogging is an easy way of making money online, do you have any tips for those people who are wanting to make money through blogging?
It is far from easy. The time it takes to write, edit, create various images and promote on social media can be overwhelming. If you want to seriously earn from it (not just a few sponsored posts here and there) then you have to treat it as a business. My biggest tip is to remember that time is money. Always find ways to streamline time-consuming tasks (say by scheduling social media posts) and don’t accept work that isn’t worthwhile. Instead of spending hours reviewing a £5 product that you’ve been gifted, use that time to find new collaborations.
6. How do you motivate yourself to keep your blog up?
It is hard, especially as a hobby. Is anyone reading this? What makes me an expert in this field? These and some other questions go through my mind on a regular basis. However, I love writing and that’s what ultimately keeps me going. I love taking an idea and turning into a story. I also love the blogging community. For people I haven’t met, they are very helpful – not just about blogging issues!
7. What do you think is the best social media strategy for driving more traffic to your blog?
I think being relatable, engaging with your audience and tagging companies (appropriately) is a good strategy. I love Instagram but I don’t really use it to drive traffic as there is only so many ways you can say “link in bio”. So it is my engagement platform. I want to love Facebook but I am also trying to spend less time on there so I don’t engage too much on there.
8. What do you find to be the most frustrating aspect of blogging?
Writing the post is not enough. I thought that blogging was just about stringing words together. There are so many tasks surrounding the creation of a post that many of mine are still in draft!
9. What is the biggest difference in your life post – blogging?
It has change a lot of my views of people and their situation. It’s difficult to put it into words but I will give an example. Previously, if I came across a post with a lot of grammatical errors I would class the writer as lazy. However, I have now come across several bloggers who are dyslexic which leads to errors in their otherwise well written post. So I am more tolerant and not as quick to judge.
10. In the future where do you hope your blog will take you?
It would be wonderful to earn from it in the future but baby steps.
Thank you to Vicky for taking her time in answering all of the interview questions. I hope you all enjoy reading her answers just as much as I have.
